CONCERTS: Purity Ring to shine at Starlite Room Sept. 10

One of the biggest buzz bands in Canada this year, Purity Ring, will drop its debut full-length “Shrines” in July. Lucky for us, band is also be performing live here in Edmonton as part of a North American tour to support the album, on an itinerary that will hit almost every corner of the continent.

The duo, comprised of Corin Roddick and Megan James, now split their time between Halifax and Montreal, but got their start right here in Edmonton, most recently touring with Gobble Gobble (now known as Born Gold). In the midst of a lengthy tour with the band, Roddick, on drums, started experimenting with some beats, asked James to perform some vocals, and Purity Ring was born, just like that. The resulting song, “Ungirthed,” received international attention and widespread acclaim in early 2011, and led to a deal with 4AD/Last Gang Recordings.

At once a combination of dream pop, rhythm and blues, and ultramodern if not futuristic hip hop, the duo performs at the venerable Starlite Room on Monday, September 10. If Born Gold’s live shows are even a remote indication of what we can expect, we are in for an extraordinary treat.
