LISTEN HERE: Mexican metal band unleashes The Midnight Terrors

Are you afraid of the dark? You’re not alone … except when you’re alone in the dark, of course. But lots of people get the so-called “midnight terrors.”

Singer Paolo Belmar cuts an imposing stance with his metal band Hellnite, but admits, “I used to be afraid of dead people.” It figures. He grew up in Mexico City (and moved to Edmonton two years ago to study guitar at MacEwan University), where “Día de Muertos” is a big deal. It must give some kids nightmares. “I’d go to bed and sometimes I thought I was seeing ghosts,” Belmar recalls.

Now Hellnite is set to release their new album, The Midnight Terrors. The first single, Midnight Terror, is a collaborative effort inspired by horror movies: “The concept of the album is the paranormal, and things that people are afraid of, the monsters under your bed, ghosts and demons. We know they’re not real. We don’t see ghost and demons, but we do see people killing each other – those kinds of things are real.”

The music, he adds, is an escape from reality.

For the album release show on Friday, June 21 at Rendezvous, Belmar will be joined by his original Mexico City bandmates, bassist Luis “Chaps” Mora and drummer Mauricio Salas, to launch a Western Canadian tour.
