LISTEN HERE: Juliet Ruin serves up a fresh bitter cup of Spite

Juliet RuinRock singer Jess Fleming would rather not hang out with narcissists.

“They’re kind of like energy vampires,” she says. “They suck all the life out of the room. They make everything about themselves, they’re faultless, they don’t take ownership about anything, and when there’s a problem, it’s you, not them.”

Jess is not alone in her opinion, and strikes a nerve with her metal band Juliet Ruin and their new single Spite. The song appears on the band’s new album, Old Stardust, Love and Chaos, being released Friday, Sept. 6 with a show at Shakers Roadhouse (Starlite Room presentation; also includes Quietus, Kosm, and Black Friday YEG on the bill; $15 advance).

Spite is inspired from the singer’s personal experience, but Fleming offers few details. She says, “It’s general look at how it feels to deal with narcissistic people. We wanted to have the angry verses, and the better-off-without-you choruses” – which are also angry, by the way. “We put a fun twist on it, talking to someone you don’t want in your life anymore: That’s it for the lesson, see you later!”
