A vegan in beef country: Morrissey comes to Edmonton in April

Wait, isn’t Morrissey that famously ornery deep-thinking British vegan singer-songwriter who’s gotten into such hot water for his outspoken views – and now he’s coming to Edmonton for the first time in more than 20 years?

Yes, the same. How can we resist?

Morrissey has announced a Canadian tour – his first since 2000 – that stops in Edmonton at the Jubilee Auditorium Thursday, April 18. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 22.

Currently one of the biggest animal rights activists in show business, the 59-year-old singer came to fame in The Smiths, a band that pretty much defined the nihilist anti-pop movement of the 1980s in a quest that seems more fruitless by the day. Morrissey carried on by himself, of course, releasing 11 studio albums since 1987. His latest is Low In High School, with another record planned for this year called California Son, on which he’ll cover artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Buffy Sainte-Marie.

In the news as much for his talk (and writings) as his music, Morrissey recently hit the tabloids (TMZ, actually) for allegedly being attacked on stage in November, a story his manager dismissed as “absolute crap.” He added that the incident was the result of an over-zealous fan.

A portion of proceeds from all tickets sold on the Canadian tour will go to area animal rights organizations.
