WHAT’S GOING ON: Arcade Fire Returns to Edmonton, Beck to Open

Contrary to some reports, Canada’s premier alternative big band has not broken up – Arcade Fire is still going strong.

It’s just that Will Butler – brother of frontman Win Butler – has left the band. Don’t worry, there still seem to be lots of musicians left. Extra horn players, at least. The band returns to Edmonton on Sunday, Nov. 27 at Rogers Place. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 13.

And what’s this? The opening act is Beck?! How exciting. He’s going to be solo and acoustic, but who cares. Beck is one of the most creative minds in alternative rock, launching his career in 1994 with the quirky Loser, which has become something of an anthem, and then progressed weirdly and wonderfully from there. If you expect the unexpected is it still unexpected? He performed with a full band at the Jubilee Auditorium in 2017 in a show that was exactly as weird as it needed to be. Read full review.

Arcade Fire, meanwhile, is touring the world on the back of their new album, WE, and is known for sprawling, lengthy and heavily arranged songs that owe some comparisons (and similar shade from detractors) to the Dave Matthews Band. Arcade Fire also performed here in the b’foretimes, in 2017. You can read the full review here.
